Happy Sunday, fellow photographers and camera enthusiasts! In case you somehow missed it, there was a total solar eclipse over Spain this week. I watched it live from afar, thinking the entire time about how many cameras must have been going off during totality. |
I'm an astrophotographer myself, but I absolutely love looking at images of space, including eclipse photos. They always blow me away, and it’s been fascinating to see what people created during this eclipse. |
Ahead of August 12’s event, I had the opportunity to interview a cinematographer about his complicated plan to record a DJ session with the eclipse as the backdrop, and I can’t wait to see the results of that. In the meantime, I’d love to see your eclipse photos! Simply reply with your photos from this eclipse if you were lucky enough to be in the path, or from a past eclipse if you, like me, weren’t there. We also had a call for images here, and were blown away by what some of you shared. |
Of course, that’s not all that happened this week. We also saw the announcement of Google’s latest lineup of Pixel phones, Insta360’s new flagship 360-degree camera, a photography video game, a robot phone, and so much more. Let’s get into it. |

P.S. If you want to make sure DPReview keeps showing up when you need it, take a moment to add us as a preferred source on Google. It's a small thing that makes a real difference. |

While we didn’t see any major new cameras or lenses this week, there were a few launches that may intrigue phone and action camera enthusiasts. Plus, there’s even something for video game fans. |
|
|
Google announced its new lineup of Pixel phones, including the Pixel 11 and 11 Pro and the Pixel 11 Pro Fold, all of which see some camera updates.
Another different take on a phone hit the market in China this week: the Honor Robot Phone, which features a built-in folding gimbal. The promo videos may be even more wild than the phone itself, too.
Inst360 launched the X6, its latest flagship 360-degree camera, which boasts larger sensors, native 8K video and more.
While not gear, we were also intrigued by the announcement of Toem 2, a new photography video game.

As mentioned in the intro, I’ve been all in on the eclipse this week. I’ve been seeing some truly incredible photos and videos as the days go by. The Sun hanging so low in the sky allowed for different types of images than I’ve seen before, and I’ve been blown away by the creativity. Here’s a small selection of my favorites. I can’t get enough, though, so feel free to send me your favorite posts, too! |

Last week, I asked you all to share images from vacation locations that linger in your mind for photographic reasons. Thank you so much to everyone who sent in photos and shared a little bit about your locations! It was wonderful getting to know some of you a bit more, and I loved seeing new corners of the world. I can’t share them all, but here are some that stood out to me. |

Nico Beccegato took this drone image with the original Mavic Air at Cape Naturaliste in South Western Australia. Nico explained that the image was sort of by accident, as they were primarily using the drone at the time to confirm they were on the right trail while making their way to the coast to see the whale migration. I love a happy accident, and this location looks incredible! |

Richard took this while vacationing on the Big Island of Hawai'i. I used to live there, though during those years the volcano wasn't erupting as much as it has been lately, so I didn’t have the opportunity to get any photos as dramatic as this. |

Vic Abeloff took this photograph of Aoraki Mount Cook with the tip of Mount Tasmania in the background. Those jagged mountains look spectacular with the surrounding clouds and water in the foreground, and I can absolutely see why this one would stick out in their mind. |

It was another quiet week with for firmware, with Leica taking the reins this time around. See some I missed? Feel free to send them my way! |
Leica D-Lux 8: Version 1.9.0 provides “bug fixes,” though that’s as specific as Leica gets.
Leica SL2: There are no release notes for Version 6.3.0, but others have reported that it adds support for the new Noctilux-M 35mm F1.2 ASPH lens and fixes battery drain from Bluetooth/Remote Wakeup, excessive vignette correction with the Noctilux-M 50mm F1.2, and manual focus issues with certain L-Mount lenses in video
Leica SL2-S: Like the SL2, Leica didn’t provide release notes, but others have said that Version 6.3.0 brings the same Noctilux-M 35mm F1.2 ASPH support and bug fixes as the SL2, plus improved focus peaking visibility during magnified manual focus in video.
Leica Q3: Version 4.1.1 (also covering the Q3 43 and Q3 Monochrom) fixes a bug that could prevent the camera from auto-powering off during wireless charging, resolves an issue causing unexpected reversion to the default user profile, and addresses connection failures after remote wake-up with certain Leica Looks or AF mode settings.

Excited to see how Viltrox's tiny 26mm F2.8 lens performs as an everyday carry option? We are too, and plan on shooting with it and sharing the results soon. (And yes, we're aware that the Z8 isn't really the best pairing for this lens, but such are the sacrifices we make to get you the highest resolution samples we can.) |

Despite being quite new, the GoPro Mission 1 and Mission 1 Pro action cameras (and all of the related bundles) are currently $100 off. If you’re interested in picking up a high-end action camera, you may want to take advantage of that. |

World Photography Day is coming up on August 19; we’ve decided to celebrate by taking pictures, and we’re challenging you to do the same. We want you to take a new photo between August 14 and August 17 that represents your local landscapes. The term landscape can be used broadly here, and it could be an urban park, a wildlife preserve, or even just your backyard. |
On August 19, we’ll be sharing some of our favorites in honor of the day. Make sure you have your images submitted by 12 pm PT / 3 pm ET / 7 pm UTC on Monday, August 17th. |
