Hi, fellow photographers. As I was putting together this week’s newsletter, one theme kept coming to mind: inspiration. If you've read any of my personal reflection pieces on DPReview, you likely aren't surprised, as it's something I often think about. But most recently, it was sparked by one particular Instagram post that has lingered in my mind (which you can see later in this newsletter). |
The video talked about using photo books as a replacement for scrolling on social media as a means for finding inspiration. I have a small collection of photo books by photographers I admire, but they mostly sit on my shelf collecting dust. I recently took one out after the photographer, who was a significant influence on my work, passed away, but that's not something I do often. The post made me want to do that with more regularity, and also inspired me to expand my collection (yes, a new book is already on the way). |
Anyway, enough musing for today. There's a lot to dig into this week, including our initial take on Sony's new cinema camera, some accessory news, firmware updates, and a few other things I think you'll enjoy. Also, if you want to make sure DPReview keeps showing up when you need it, take a moment to add us as a preferred source on Google. It's a small thing that makes a real difference. |

Speaking of inspiration, I’ve always been a fan of Gregory Crewdson's work, and he recently did something outside his norm: create commissioned work. The image was created for musician Phoebe Bridgers upcoming tour and, in classic Crewdson fashion, it is epic. Rolling Stone shared some behind-the-scenes footage of the shoot, giving a neat, albeit brief, glimpse into his process. |

Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey hit theaters on July 17th, and while I still haven't had a chance to see it myself, I've been loving all the behind-the-scenes content. That includes this 60 Minutes clip where Nolan walks through the last film lab to print 70mm film. |

Peak Design announced a Kickstarter for its Field Bracket, an L-bracket with a modular design. It even designed a few new accessories specifically for this bracket, aiming to make it a versatile option for creatives who need lots of flexibility. Godoc unveiled the Lux Junior II, an update on its retro-inspired compact flash. It adds a handful of worthwhile features, including a dual-axis design, TTL metering, a built-in rechargeable battery, and wireless receiver functionality. It’s available for pre-order for $79. |

Firmware updates often go under the radar, even though they can be quite important and helpful. There weren’t many this week, but we’ve still gathered them together for you. See some I missed? Feel free to send them my way! |
After some delays, Tamron has finally released updated firmware for its 35-150mm F/2-2.8 Di III VXD for E mount, unlocking support for the latest version of the Tamron Lens Utility app and Tamron Link accessory for wireless lens firmware updates. Nikon released some subtle fixes and refinements in firmware version 1.10 for the Z50 II Fujifilm released firmware version 1.1 for its GFX Eterna 55 medium format cinema camera, which promises improved stability and usability. It also shared a roadmap of updates coming over the next year. Canon’s firmware version 1.1.0 for the EOS R6 V, which adds support for external flash and its BR‑E2 wireless remote, along with other minor fixes. Firmware version 1.1.0 for the Canon EOS R6 Mark III adds close-up demo AF in more video modes, grid display while recording, and BR-E2 support, alongside bug fixes for FTP transfers, USB connectivity, and interval shooting.
