Good morning, photographers. If there’s a theme running through this week’s newsletter, it’s that photography’s past never stays in the past for long. |
Yashica announced a $119 price for its 1950s-inspired micro camera, as well as a release date. Godox is bringing its flash expertise to smartphones, and in this week’s Throwback Thursday, we revisit the Fujifilm F200 EXR, an overlooked compact camera whose ideas live on in the phone in your pocket. |
Film photography is a thread throughout this issue, too, from a look inside the surprisingly intricate mechanics of an old Pentax SLR to videos of Abby teaching Mitchell how to make his first darkroom print. Just watching them work in the darkroom brought back memories of making prints and learning to develop my own Ektachrome slide film. Even for those of us who spend most of our time with the latest digital gear, there’s something about the slower, tactile nature of film that keeps drawing us back in. |
We’ll get to all of that below, along with a community photo chain that’s still going strong after more than 1,400 posts. Grab a coffee and settle in. |

Modern cameras have far fewer moving parts than their film-era predecessors. Many film cameras relied on intricate mechanical systems, some so elaborate that it’s a miracle they worked at all. This video takes us under the hood of an old Pentax SLR, revealing just how complex those mechanics could be. |

After the recent launch of a SpaceX resupply mission to the ISS, social media has been full of photos of the “space jellyfish” effect that can appear as a Falcon 9 rocket climbs through the upper atmosphere. But my favorite was definitely this photo from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. |

Finally, one of the videos that stopped my scroll this week came from our own feed. In this quick take, Features Editor Abby Ferguson shows Reviews Editor Mitchell Clark how to make his first darkroom print. |

One of the most active threads in the DPReview forums over the past few months has been our Collaborative Photo Chain. The concept is simple: one person starts the chain with a photo, and each new post adds a photo that shares a common element with the one before it. Our current chain started in May and is still going strong more than 1,400 posts later. |
One recent addition that really caught my attention is the photo above by community member Lance B, a reminder that spring has sprung in Australia. |
Photo chains are a fun activity for a group of friends or your local photography club. To see how ours works and add your own photo, follow the link above. |

Abby teaches Mitchell about printing (Digital Edition) |
|
|
If you read our Posts that Stopped the Scroll section earlier in this newsletter, you’ve already seen a preview of this story: the quick take of Mitchell making his first darkroom print. But here’s the full backstory. |
Our Features Editor, Abby Ferguson, is passionate about teaching photography, so when she learned that Reviews Editor Mitchell Clark had never made a darkroom print, she knew what she had to do. The next time they were in the same city, she took him into the darkroom, and a few hours (and some dodging and burning) later, Mitchell had his first print. If you want to see every step of the darkroom process, watch the extended cut here. |
However, darkroom printing was only half of Abby’s lesson. She also walked Mitchell through digital printing – the way most of us make our prints today. The behind-the-scenes video at the top of this section lets you listen in on that conversation, which didn’t make it into either of our other videos. |
