Digital Photography Review Newsletter

Wednesday, 29 October 2014
The most popular weekly photography newsletter, with over 300,000 subscribers

Welcome to the 533nd Digital Photography Review newsletter.

Busy busy busy - I just got back from the airport and I'm preparing to leave again in less than 12 hours to head to PPE in New York. This is the time of year when we always seem try to do a lot in a small amount of time. Speaking of which, if you missed our recent 2-day live broadcast event, you can catch up with all of the segments now in our video section (link below). A highlight for me was interviewing Art Wolfe - a fascinating man, and a great photographer.

Last week I also had the pleasure of speaking to Anne Geddes - a very different type of artist, and a dedicated philanthropist. I learned a lot about the person behind the very well-known style and you can see that interview here.

DPReview Live 2014

Earlier this month we teamed up with CreativeLive to produce two days of live streaming interviews and discussions about photography, photo gear and industry trends. We've just added the videos to our archive so you can catch anything you missed or want to re-watch. See our interviews with representatives from Sony, Sigma, Samsung, Ricoh, Panasonic, Olympus, Nikon, Lytro, Fujifilm and Canon, and re-live the highlights from the world's biggest photo tradeshow in our look back at Photokina 2014.

A look back at the week: October 25, 2014

Last week was a busy week here in the DPReview office as we worked hard on some post-Photokina reviews and prepared for PPE. We also got a serious dose of Pacific Northwest fall weather, and the rainy afternoons and evenings left us plenty of time to go poking around the corners of the internet for important (read: probably not really important) things that happened in the world of photography.

Click here to take a look back at last week

What's coming up?

Photo Plus Expo in New York starts tomorrow, and at 4am tomorrow I'll be waking up and making my groggy way to the airport for meetings, briefings and interviews. We're not expecting a lot of 'news' at this year's PPE given its proximity to last month's Photokina, but we may get surprised. You never know. Meanwhile, I'll be drafting a conclusion to the D810 review on the plane, and we're also working on some exciting new video content for later in the year.

See you next week!

GearShop update - a message from the team

Still the flagship APS-C sensor camera from Nikon, the 24 megapixel D7100 is a proven winner and still very relevant. This week you can save $450 on the two lens bundle, or pick up a body-only deal at a savings of $250 from list price. All with free 2-day shipping, of course.

If you want extreme low-light capability, the 50mm f/1.4 is also available separately at a savings of $150 off normal price. On an APS-C body, the coverage reaches into the portrait realm at 75mm equivalence at f/1.4, and overall makes this a great combination with the D7100's high ISO performance and quick handling.

Until next week - the GearShop Team

Welcome to the 532nd Digital Photography Review newsletter.

Autumn has well and truly arrived here in Seattle, and as I write this, rain is lashing against the windows of the DPReview office. Inside, we're huddling around the studio lights for warmth, and roasting potatoes on the tops of our Apple iMacs...

While we do that, why don't you take a look at some recent content highlights?

Apple iPhone 6 Plus camera review

The iPhone 6 Plus, introduced alongside the iPhone 6, offers one distinct feature that its sibling doesn't - optical image stabilization. In all other respects, their 8MP cameras, F2.2 aperture lenses and updated AF systems are the same. On paper the 6 Plus doesn't represent a great leap forward in terms of camera tech, but how does it perform in the real world?

Fotodiox creates 'Tough E-Mount' for Sony E & FE-mount cameras

Published on Saturday, October 18, 2014 9:00:00 AM GMT

Sony's NEX and Alpha range of E and FE-mount cameras have a lot going for them, but some users have reported a 'wiggle' in the lensmount, especially when heavier lenses, or third-party optics via adapters are used. Fotodiox thinks it has the answer with its new 'Tough E-Mount' - literally a replacement lensmount for E and FE-mount cameras. With a single metal ring replacing the two (one metal, one plastic) originally attached to the camera, the Tough E-Mount should (according to the manufacturer) eliminate any movement between camera and lens. Click through for more details
