Welcome to the 558th Digital Photography Review newsletter.

Following March and April's flurry of camera reviews, we're conducting tests and putting in the hours with the next batch of models to keep you informed about the latest models. We've also been writing some articles to address some of the core concepts of digital photography, spoken to Canon about its compact, semi-pro all-in-one video camera, the XC10. Oh, and we found time to get out and shoot some images with Panasonic's CM1 large-sensor smartphone. It's been a pretty busy week, all told.

Here are some other highlights from our homepage over the past few days:

What's that noise? Or why it's not the ISO you should worry about

Noise is one of the limiting factors of image quality in photography, yet it's often poorly understood, as are the means of minimising it. In the first of a multi-part article, we explain that most of the noise you encounter doesn't come from your camera at all and what you can do to minimise it.

Hands on with the Pentax K-3 II

Ricoh has made clear its commitment to the Pentax brand with the public confirmation that a full frame model is in the works. In the meantime it's given its range-topping K-3 a mid-life refresh. The latest iteration of the DPR Gold-winning DSLR gains a four-shot sensor shift mode that promises to improve colour resolution and lower noise, it also gains built-in GPS, giving access to its Astrotracer mode. We got our hands on a pre-production camera and had a look at what else is new.

NAB 2015 Interview: Canon's Chuck Westfall on the XC10

We met up with Canon's Chuck Westfall at NAB to discuss the design choices that underpin its XC10 compact video camera. We touched on the camera's unusual still/video hybrid ergonomics, its advanced features, such as its 300MB/s video codec and why they chose to go down the 1"-type sensor and built-in lens route.

Panasonic CM1 sample gallery

There are times when even the most committed photographer doesn't have their camera with them, but smartphones don't always provide the necessary quality. Panasonic's CM1 smartphone tries to bridge this gap by including the same 1"-type sensor as its FZ1000 super-superzoom. The prospect of a nice, big sensor and 28mm equivalent F2.8 lens generated a lot of interest in the office, so we've tried to put together an appropriately varied sample gallery, including Raw conversions and a handful of its DNG files, to show whether it justified that interest.

Click here to explore our Panasonic CM1 samples gallery

What else is coming up?

We're still waiting for the new Canon Rebels and a couple of other forthcoming cameras of interest but, in the meantime, we've been gathering superzooms and wrangling photons with Nikon's D7200. You'll be able to read about these and more over the coming weeks.

What's that noise? Shedding some light on the sources of noise

Published on Monday, April 27, 2015 4:00:00 PM GMT

How would you react if you were told that the aperture and shutter speed you choose make more difference to image noise than the ISO setting? You might be surprised to discover that a lot of the noise in your images doesn't come from your camera at all: it comes from the light you're capturing. Our own Richard Butler explains. Read more

Welcome to the 557th Digital Photography Review newsletter.

It's been another busy few days here at DPReview. Dale returned from NAB at the end of last week, and we published a roundup of show highlights on Friday. It's worth checking out - especially if you like drones. Fujifilm released a new lens, the very nice-looking XF 16mm F1.4 R WR - a 24mm equivalent fast prime that we've been admiring on the company's roadmap for a while, and it looks like Sony might have some fun new sensors on the way soon, too.

Here are some other highlights from our homepage over the past few days:

Opinion: Can an Aperture user be happy with Apple's new 'Photos' software?

One of the most talked about subjects for photographers using Macs to process and archive their photos is the loss of Apple Aperture and its replacement, simply known as Photos. This new software strongly resembles the iOS software of the same name and while it still offers some of the features from the enthusiast-grade Aperture, quite a few things are missing. Learn more about Photos - both what it offers and doesn't - in this opinion piece from senior writer Jeff Keller.

After the excitement of the Sony A77 II review we're going to be moving full steam ahead with our reviews of Nikon's D810 and D7200, as well as a roundup of this year's crop of superzoom compact cameras. We're also hoping to receive reviewable samples of Canon's new EOS 5DS/R and Rebel T6s and T6i at some point, too. Fingers crossed we'll get hold of them before they start shipping!

Columbia University researchers create self-powered video camera

Published on Thursday, April 16, 2015 6:30:00 PM GMT

Columbia University researchers have created a self-powered video camera featuring a sensor that both captures images and powers the device. Although it can only record low-resolution 30x40 pixel images at 1fps, the photodiodes on the camera's sensor can switch between being photoconductive, and photovoltaic. In the latter mode - given enough light - the photodiodes supply enough power to a built-in supercapacitor to keep the camera operating indefinitely. Click through for more information

Digital Photography Review Newsletter

Wednesday, 15 April 2015
The most popular weekly photography newsletter, with over 300,000 subscribers

Welcome to the 556th Digital Photography Review newsletter.

As promised, late last week we published our review of the Samsung NX1 - a product which has really shaken up the market - and not just for mirrorless cameras. We've also been covering news from the NAB show in Last Vegas, and we'll follow-up with a roundup of the most important announcements at the end of the week.

OK, let's take a look at some recently-published content!

In a class of its own: Samsung NX1 review

Samsung's NX1 seemed to offer pretty much every feature possible when we were first briefed about it last year. Its 28.2MP APS-C BSI sensor, hybrid AF system, 4K video and 15 fps continuous shooting with AF have continued to impress us throughout our extensive testing. Can such an innovative on-paper feature set make it a serious competitor to well-established brands in the DSLR and mirrorless worlds?

Video Field Test: Tamron SP 15-30mm F2.8 Di VC USD

Tamron claims that its new SP 15-30mm F2.8 Di VC USD offers prime lens quality across its focal length range, paired with a fast maximum aperture and - uniquely in its class - an optical vibration compensation system. We've been impressed by how this wideangle zoom performs in our studio, but that's only half the story. Our latest video field test follows DPReview technical editor Rishi Sanyal as he uses the Tamron 15-30mm to shoot architecture, cityscapes and waterfalls.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 camera review

The Note 4 is the latest iteration of Samsung's top-end line of so-called 'phablets'. In terms of design the new model is very close to its predecessor, the Galaxy Note 3, but under the hood, things have been upgraded significantly. A 1/2.6-inch 16MP BSI CMOS image sensor and F2.2 maximum aperture are shared with the Galaxy S5 but the Note 4 has gained an optical image stabilization system which makes it the first Samsung smartphone with this feature.

CP+ 2015: Nikon Interview - 'We learned from the D600 episode'

When we attended CP+ earlier this year in Yokohama, Japan we sat down with senior executives from several major camera and lens manufacturers. We were lucky enough to sit down with a number of Nikon engineers to ask them about their overall strategy with respect to FX vs DX, and DSLR vs mirrorless. We were also able to ask pointed technical questions regarding innovative technologies in Nikon cameras, and the answers were very enlightening.

What else is coming up?

With the Samsung NX1 out of the way we're focused on adding the final pieces to our review of the Sony SLT-A77 II. Work continues on our review of Nikon's latest high-end DX format DSLR, the D7200, too, and after that we're hoping to (finally) hammer the long-awaited Nikon D810 review into shape. Also expect some more updates from the NAB show in Las Vegas, which is taking place this week.
