Welcome to the 688th Digital Photography Review newsletter. It looks like the holiday buying season is well underway, if the shopper-packed streets of Seattle are anything to go by. But, just because we've published our buying guides doesn't mean we can join the present-buying frenzy, oh no. Instead: Sony a7R III Review There are plenty of people who'll tell you the a7R III is either a Nikon D850 beater or a warmed-over a7R II. We've spent the past few weeks shooting a couple of the cameras in a variety of situations, to test just where its strengths and weaknesses lie. Our review assesses the total impact of all those changes made over its predecessor. Read our in-depth Sony a7R III review to see what we thought LG V30 Review With all the hoopla about Google's Pixel and the tenth iteration of a certain fruit-based device, there's a risk of missing out on some very capable phones from other manufacturers. The LG V30 is just one such example: it goes down the dual camera route but offers a ultra-wide 120 degree camera, rather than the more common portrait telephoto option. Read our review to see what we thought Gear of the Year 2017 It's getting to that time of year when we look back at all the releases we've covered and the cameras we've tested. Our collectively-decided awards are coming soon but first we wanted to highlight the products and features that had stood out for us, this year. They're strictly personal assessments, which you're welcome to disagree with. Take a look at what each of us thought were the stand-out products of 2017 Twenty years of DCResource Jeff Keller's DCResource started life twenty years ago this week, pre-dating even DPReview. Jeff took our Throwback Thursday strand as an opportunity to look at the highs and lows of half a lifetime devoted to digital cameras. Read Jeff Keller's look back at DCResource OnePlus 5T First Impressions Review The OnePlus 5T is another dual-camera flagship smartphone. Our man in Madrid has been shooting with one and has put together his first impressions. Read our First Impressions Review of the OnePlus 5T
There's plenty more to come before the end of the year, including your chance to vote for your favourite photography gear. As always, stay tuned. Richard | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Welcome to the 687th Digital Photography Review newsletter. With Thanksgiving almost upon us, we've been racing to finish our seasonal buying guides and product roundups, and I'm pleased (and relieved) to provide links to all of them below. It was a lot of work, and I hope you find it to be a useful resource. In the middle of all that, Leica announced a new mirrorless camera - the APS-C format CL. The forth in the L-mount lineup, the CL offers a more conventional handling experience than the T/L and TL2, while still retaining the touch features of those earlier models. I've been shooting with it for a little while, and I've prepared a small gallery and first-impressions review. You'll find links to all of this in-depth content below. 2017 Camera Buying Guides and Gift Ideas There's never been a better time to shop for a new camera, but the number of options available can be overwhelming. In this series of buying guides we've provided customized recommendations for several use cases and budget levels. We've also selected some great holiday gifts and provided recommendations for the best drones and smartphones currently on the market. Check out our full suite of buying guides Leica CL: Full launch content While it shares a name with one of Leica's most popular and affordable cameras of the 1970s, the new CL is separated from its namesake by more than just years. It's digital for starters, and shares a lot of its core specification with the 24MP TL2, while offering a more conventional handling experience and a built-in viewfinder, in a body similar in size to the X2. Check out our full launch content on the Leica CL Analysis: The Sony a7R III is still a star eater Despite reports to the contrary, analysis of DPReview images by our friend Jim Kasson confirms a disappointing fact: The Sony a7R III is still a Star Eater. Behind the scenes: Shooting a cinematic short film with the iPhone X Photographer Ryan Earl and filmmaker Nick Arcivos of AmnesiArt recently created an extremely impressive cinematic short film. Impressive not only because the shots were gorgeous, well-planned, and well-executed... but also because the entire thing was shot on an iPhone X. Read more about using the iPhone X as a cine camera Is the future of beginner photography a bright orange camera with no buttons? A Bay Area startup offering a pay-by-the-photo camera service cleverly addresses the pain points photographers experience when they pick up their first DSLR. But can it survive the smartphone?
