Welcome to the 518th Digital Photography Review newsletter. We're missing the World Cup already, but thoughts of Germany are fresh in our minds as we book travel and accommodation for Photokina - the world's biggest photography tradeshow, held later this year in Cologne. As always we'll be heading out there to report on everything the show has to offer, from new products to interviews with some of the most influential figures in the global photo industry. September seems like a long way off, but it'll be upon us in no time. Back to the present! Here are a few content highlights from the past few days: One step ahead: Nikon 1 V3 Review We've just completed our full review of the 1 V3, Nikon's flagship mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera. The V3 offers an 18.4 megapixel 1"-type CMOS sensor, a significant gain in resolution over its 14.2 megapixel V2 predecessor. Since its introduction the 1 system has offered impressive auto focus and burst shooting capabilities - read our review to find out just how well it performed in our testing. Click here to read our review of the Nikon 1 V3 Camera Review: Samsung Galaxy S5 We've come to expect loads of camera features from Samsung's high end smartphones and the Galaxy S5 does not come up short. The S5 offers a 16MP BSI CMOS sensor, F2.2 lens and 4K video recording. With claims of improved AF speeds and the addition of features like real-time HDR processing and Selective Focus, Samsung's flagship device has a lot of potential as a photographic tool. Does its performance live up to its specs? Read our review of the Samsung Galaxy S5's camera Mountain Magic: Shooting in the Lofoten Islands Way up in Norway's arctic northwest lies a small, yet incredibly beautiful and diverse archipelago, home to some of that country's most magical landscapes and a truly wonderful winter atmosphere. Photographer Erez Marom shares his experience of shooting in the Lofoten Islands in Arctic Norway, from a traditional fishing village to mountains and ice-covered lakes. Read 'Mountain Magic: Shooting in the Lofoten Islands' Ricoh Announces Pentax XG-1 Superzoom Ricoh has announced the Pentax XG-1 superzoom, featuring a 16MP BSI-CMOS sensor and a 24-1248mm equivalent F2.8-5.6 zoom lens - covering a 52x optical zoom range. Other specs include a fixed 460k-dot 3.0-inch LCD, built-in EVF and full resolution burst shooting at 9 fps. Click here to read more about the Pentax XG-1 What's coming up? Work continues on the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ1000 review and we're also putting a lot of time into shooting with the Sony A7S, with the aim of publishing more lab work and some real-world sample images from that camera very soon. Likewise the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 which we're hoping to compare to the A7S in some detail. Just today we received a production-quality sample of Fujifilm's new high-end standard zoom for the X-series, the XF 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR too, so look out for some sample images very soon. News updates Adobe Photoshop Express update brings Raw editing Published on Monday, July 14, 2014 9:12:00 PM GMT Adobe has updated both the iOS and Android versions of its free Photoshop Express mobile app. The new version comes with a number of added features and improvements but to many photographers the most useful new function will be the ability to edit Raw files. But its predecessor, demolished in 1955, was nothing short of stunning. It might just help you kick of a fun weekend photo project. Learn more Read full story → DxO FilmPack 4 and ViewPoint 2 updates provide compatibility with Photoshop CC Published on Saturday, July 12, 2014 12:25:00 AM GMT DxO has released updates for its FilmPack film emulation and ViewPoint perspective correction software, enabling them to be fully integrated with Adobe Photoshop CC 2014. Both are available as standalone applications or as a plugin for Lightroom and Photoshop. FilmPack v4.5.2 and Viewpoint v2.1.7 are available for download now. Read more Read full story → DxO Optics Pro v9.5.1 released with support for five new cameras Published on Friday, July 11, 2014 10:11:00 PM GMT Software maker DxO Labs has announced the release of DxO Optics Pro 9.5.1 for Mac, which includes support for five additional cameras. Read full story → Adobe Lightroom allows users continued access after license expires Published on Friday, July 11, 2014 4:41:00 PM GMT Adobe's latest Lightroom update has made it possible for subscribers to continue accessing their images and edits, as well as some limited functions of Lightroom once a license for it has ended. Key functions, including the ability to use the Develop module, do go away once the subscription is out of date, but users retain the ability to view, organize and export images. Read more Read full story → VSCO launches $1M artist initiative fund Published on Friday, July 11, 2014 4:38:00 PM GMT Image sharing and film emulation service VSCO has launched a scholarship fund totaling $1 million. Calling it the Artist Initiative, the program assists photographers and visual artists chosen by the company with funding and promotion of their work. The first round of recipients has been announced, including 12 creatives from across the globe. Learn more  Read full story → LensRentals tests Lomography's Petzval lens Published on Friday, July 11, 2014 12:00:00 AM GMT We recently published a look at the Lomography Petzval lens, a modern version of a 19th century portrait lens. It's a niche product and not something we typically cover, but an interesting adaptation of a classic design. Roger Cicala and the team at LensRentals went one step further - when a couple of copies rolled through the door, they subjected the lens to their usual optics tests. Why? A new device that joins this list is That Steady Thing - a metal boss that sits between a monopod's leg and its head, into which a pair of steadying legs screw. See if it lives up to its name. Does its performance live up to its specs? Read review Read full story → Olympus takes Pen E-PL6 beyond Asia Published on Wednesday, July 9, 2014 4:25:00 PM GMT The Olympus Pen E-PL6, first announced in 2013 for the Asian market, is set to be introduced to the UK kitted with a pancake-style zoom lens and a Wi-Fi memory card. The M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 EZ zoom lens is a pancake design, which Olympus claims is the slimmest of its type in this class. The 16.1 megapixel camera uses the same Live MOS sensor and TruePic VI processor as the 2012 PEN E-PL5 it replaces. It will retail in the UK for £429.99 from mid-July. Read full story → Shooting Experience: Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ1000 Published on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 7:28:00 PM GMT Panasonic's latest superzoom camera, the Lumix DMC-FZ1000 offers a highly attractive feature set. Based around a 25-400mm equivalent zoom and a large 1"-type CMOS sensor the FZ1000 combines a very useful zoom range with excellent image quality in stills and video mode. Read more Read full story → ZTE announces Nubia Z7 with 5.5-inch QHD display Published on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 3:43:00 PM GMT Chinese smartphone manufacturer ZTE has launched its latest high-end model and looking at the Nubia Z7's specifications it's clear the new model aims to compete at the very top of the market. The Nubia comes with a 13MP imaging sensor in its camera module, its lens boasts an F2.0 maximum aperture and an optical image stabilization system is available for keeping things steady in low light.
