Welcome to the 562nd Digital Photography Review newsletter. I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend - those of you in the UK and USA, at least. I spent mine taking pictures, as usual. Canon Rebel T6s/T6i First Impressions Review updated We've finished putting the Canon EOS Rebel T6s and T6i (760D and 750D) through our battery of image quality tests, and have updated our First Impressions Review with these results, along with explanations of what you might expect out of Canon's latest 24.2MP APS-C sensors. We've also added galleries of real-world samples and a detailed shooting experience. Take a look at his work and read our Q&A. See gallery Read full story → UPDATED: Leica issues new statement regarding crashes with Monochrom Raw files in Apple's Photos App Published on Friday, May 22, 2015 9:52:00 PM GMT Leica has updated users of Apple's Photos and Aperture software regarding crashing issues when DNG files from its new Leica Monochrom (typ 246) are opened. The company says that the photo libraries of these applications will not be damaged by these crashes, and that Apple is working on an update that will resolve the issue.  Read more Read full story → DxOMark Mobile Report on HTC One M9 Published on Friday, May 22, 2015 8:00:49 PM GMT DxOMark Mobile has published their report on the HTC One M9, HTC's latest top-end smartphone. The new model is a touch smaller and thinner than its predecessor, the One M8, but under the hood HTC upgrades the 4MP "ultrapixel" 1/3" BSI sensor of the predecessor to a larger, higher resolution 20MP 1/2.3" BSI CMOS sensor. The F2.2 lens provides no optical image stabilization, but the M9 is the first One model capable of recording 4K video. Read our report on DxOMark's findings Read full story → Canon EOS Rebel T6s/T6i First Impressions updated with shooting experience Published on Friday, May 22, 2015 7:23:00 PM GMT We'd expect image quality from Canon's EOS Rebel T6s and T6i (760D and 750D) to be very similar, and so far the 24.2MP APS-C DSLRs haven't surprised us in our studio tests. The real differences between these two models is in the user experience, as the T6s provides advanced touches like a top-panel LCD and rear quick control dial for easier access to exposure settings. Watch the video Read full story → Fujifilm FinePix S1 real-world sample gallery posted Published on Thursday, May 21, 2015 5:39:00 PM GMT At 50X, the Fujifilm FinePix S1 may not have the longest lens in its class, but it is the only superzoom that's weather-sealed and one of the very few with Raw support. Naturally, this means that we did some Raw conversions and shot in in the rain, and you can see the results in our samples gallery. View photos Read full story → Ona introduces black version of the Leica M edition Berlin ll bag Published on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 7:12:00 PM GMT US luxury camera bag brand Ona has announced a new black version of its Berlin ll messenger-style bag. Designed especially for the Leica M system, the Berlin was originally a limited edition model created to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Leica, but the Berlin ll went on general release beyond Leica stores. Previously only available in the Vintage Bourbon tan finish, the black version of the Berlin has been created, according to Ona, because so many people asked for it. Read more Read full story → Olympus highlights the issues faced by 'DSL-Arm' sufferers, and claims to offer a cure Published on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 6:46:47 PM GMT Olympus USA has produced a spoof documentary that claims to highlight the problems faced by those who spend too long carrying heavy DSLR equipment. The hero of the films, Paul, suffers a condition called 'DSL-Arm,' which is characterized by a dramatic lengthening of the right arm as a result of carrying weighty camera bodies and lenses. Read more Read full story → Oppo launches R7 and R7 Plus Published on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 5:53:17 PM GMT Chinese manufacturer Oppo has today launched its new duo of flagship phones, the R7 and R7 Plus. The R7 features a 5" 1080p screen, while a 6" screen with the same resolution places the Plus model firmly into phablet territory. In the camera department both smartphones combine a 13MP sensor with an F2.2 lens but the R7 Plus chip is, like the Huawei P8, of the RGBW variant and supported by laser-AF and a dual-LED flash. Read more Read full story → Canon EOS Rebel T6s/T6i added to studio test scene comparison Published on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 4:58:00 PM GMT The Canon EOS Rebel T6s and T6i (760D and 750D) have been in our hands long enough to put together a couple of real-world sample galleries, and now we've added the cameras to our studio test scene comparison tool. The new 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor that these cameras share represents a step forward for Canon's Rebel lineup, which had been using an 18MP chip since the T2i. Read more Read full story → Sigma announces price and release date for its 21mm dp0 Quattro compact camera Published on Tuesday, May 19, 2015 10:21:21 PM GMT Sigma UK has said that the company's latest compact camera from the Quattro line will cost £899.99 and will be available from the end of June. First announced at the CP+ show in February this year, the dp0 Quattro is the fourth of the unusually designed Quattro range and features a 14mm F4 lens. With the 23.5x15.7mm Foveon image sensor this focal length delivers a similar angle of view as a 21mm lens would on a full frame system. Read more Read full story → Fujifilm XF 16mm F1.4 R WR real-world sample gallery posted Published on Tuesday, May 19, 2015 7:04:00 PM GMT The Fujifilm XF 16mm f/1.4 R WR is a weather-sealed prime, equivalent to a 24mm field of view on Fujifiilm's X-mount cameras. With a close focus distance of just 0.15m/6in. and a fast F1.4 aperture, this lens is super versatile. In our sample testing we found it to be sharp, and to offer pleasing bokeh. The company has been good about providing useful updates for the NX1, and firmware version 1.30 continues this trend. Welcome to the 561st Digital Photography Review newsletter. It's already been a pretty eventful week, with new cameras announced by both Fujifilm and Panasonic over the weekend. We've had some time with the Fujifilm X-T10 and Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7, and we've prepared some preview content on both new cameras - links below. Fujifilm X-T10 First Impressions & Image Samples The Fujifilm X-T10 shares a similar relationship to the X-T1 that the OM-D E-M10 shares with its siblings - advanced features borrowed from a higher-spec model in a compact body. The X-T10 uses the X-T1's 16MP APS-C X-Trans sensor but offers slightly downgraded hardware and lacks weather-sealing. We've had the X-T10 in our hands long enough to get familiar with it and put together some first impressions. We can all collect cameras and lenses, but when it comes to using them we sometimes run out of things to take pictures of. Using the themes and category titles from photo competitions can provide a little bit of the oomph we often need to get shooting. Click to read our roundup of photography competitions The Long Journey of 'The Long Night': Tim Matsui's work to document underage sex trafficking in the US We spoke with photographer and multimedia artist Tim Matsui last year about the making of his feature documentary, The Long Night. A year later the film has won some of the top awards in photojournalism and the work hasn't stopped for Matsui. We caught up with him again to discuss what it took to make and distribute this film and what comes next for him. Click to read our interview with Tim Matsui What else is coming up? Using the same 16MP APS-C X-Trans image sensor as its big brother, the X-T10 is equipped with new subject tracking AF modes introduced via firmware to the X-T1. Read more Read full story → Fujifilm makes XF 90mm F2 R LM WR official Published on Monday, May 18, 2015 5:00:00 AM GMT Fujifilm has formally announced the 90mm F2 R LM WR, a lens we saw in prototype at this year's CP+ show in Japan. It gives a 137mm equivalent view on Fuji's APS-C camera bodies, a popular focal length with portrait and event photographers. Canon's new full-frame resolution monster features a 50.6MP CMOS sensor and cancels out its anti-aliasing filter to make the most of those pixels. See gallery Read full story → Leica's Red Dot Forum warns of crash risk with Monochrom Raw files in Apple's Photos App Published on Friday, May 15, 2015 4:48:16 PM GMT Users of the new Leica Monochrom (typ 246) risk wiping out their Apple Photos library if they try to use it to store the DNG Raw files created by the camera, according to a statement from Leica's Red Dot Forum. Mac computer owners running OS X Yosemite will find the files cause the library to crash, which Leica says could lead to all images saved in the library being destroyed. Read more Read full story → Shutterdial offers Flickr searches based on EXIF Published on Friday, May 15, 2015 12:18:00 AM GMT Despite the service's recent major update, Flickr doesn't yet offer a way for users to search content based on camera settings. We caught up with him again to discuss what it took to make and distribute this film and what comes next for him. Read more Read full story → MIT algorithm aims to eradicate reflections from photos taken through windows Published on Thursday, May 14, 2015 5:00:00 AM GMT Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology claim to have developed a method for eliminating reflections in glass via digital processing. It is hoped that with further development the idea could see its way into digital cameras, allowing reflections to be automatically removed when they interfere with the view through a window. The Emissary is geared specifically to photographers' needs with attachable pockets, a removable laptop compartment, a locking mechanism inspired by film-advance levers and a lens cap mount. Once it's thrown into the air it begins automatically following its target, which is anyone in possession of the accompanying GPS tracking device. Its camera captures 1080/60p HD video and 12MP stills, and the device itself is waterproof to 1 meter underwater. Read more Read full story → Nikon 300mm F4E PF ED VR real world samples gallery posted Published on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 9:57:53 PM GMT The Nikon 300mm F4E PF ED VR is an extremely light-weight, compact telephoto lens well-suited for use on both FX and DX Nikon bodies. It is 30% shorter and 1.5 lbs / 0.68kg lighter than its predecessor, thanks to the use of a Phase Fresnel design. We paired it with a variety of FX and DX cameras and put together a selection of real world sample images. See gallery Read full story → Linnaeus Tripe photographs of 1850s Burma and India on show in New York and London Published on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 7:17:42 PM GMT An exhibition of photographs taken by Captain Linnaeus Tripe during a tour of India and Burma is on show in The Metropolitan Museum in New York, and will then move to London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. The M.Zuiko Digital ED 7-14mm F2.8 and 8mm F1.8 Fisheye bring some new options to the table for Micro Four Thirds shooters - click through for a link to our sample galleries Read full story → Hands-on with new Olympus PRO 8mm and 7-14mm lenses Published on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 5:00:00 AM GMT They've been on Olympus's roadmap for a while, but today the company officially announced two new wideangle 'Pro' lenses - the M.ZUIKO Digital ED 7-14mm f2.8 PRO and M.ZUIKO Digital ED 8mm Fisheye PRO. The 8mm fisheye is equivalent to a 16mm, while the 7-14mm covers an equivalent focal length range of 14-28mm. Both lenses are weather-sealed and are clearly intended for use with the company's high-end OM-D cameras. Click through for a closer look Read full story → Olympus expands wide angle offerings with 7-14mm F2.8 and 8mm F1.8 'Pro' lenses Published on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 5:00:00 AM GMT Olympus has announced two additions to its Micro Four Thirds 'Pro' lens series, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 7-14mm F2.8 and 8mm F1.8 Fisheye PRO. Both are weather and dust resistant and lighter than their competitors, according to the company, and both are slated to become available in June. Read more Read full story → Olympus offers limited edition Titanium OM-D E-M5 II and firmware update Published on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 5:00:00 AM GMT Olympus has announced that it is is producing a new limited edition 'Titanium' OM-D E-M5 II camera. The Titanium E-M5 II will offer all of the same features and specs of the regular version, with its top and bottom plates swapped out for dark metallic versions that match those of the OM-3/Ti from 1994. Worldwide, 7,000 copies of the Titanium model will be made, though how many will be available in the US is yet to be announced. The company is also readying firmware updates for both the E-M1 and E-M5 II, related mostly to underwater shooting. Read more Read full story →

The Titanium E-M5 II will offer all of the same features and specs of the regular version, with its top and bottom plates swapped out for dark metallic versions that match those of the OM-3/Ti from 1994. The company states that on certain cameras 'white spots may exist on the optical layer which may result in the appearance of dark circular patterns on the captured image under certain shooting conditions'. In the new design images are displayed in a similar way to Apple's own Photos app, with images grouped by capture date. However, rumors have emerged that in some units Samsung sensors are used instead of the Sony variant, and a company spokesperson has confirmed that different sensors are used.
