Welcome to the 592nd Digital Photography Review newsletter. Christmas is just around the corner, and I can't wait. This year has been incredibly busy for us here at DPReview, and we have lots of exciting new things on the way for you in 2016. Not only new products (watch our homepage for announcements from CES next month and CP+ in February) but site improvements, too. Meanwhile though, here are some recent content highlights! In Fine Detail: Canon EOS 5DS / 5DS R In-Depth Review Canon has added to its EOS 5D range with the launch of two 50MP cameras, the 5DS and the 5DS R. Both cameras are high-resolution full frame models, primarily aimed at stills photographers. The only difference between the models is that the 'S' has an optical low-pass filter, while the 'S R' has a self-canceling filter (the same relationship as Nikon's D800 and D800E models shared). We've put both cameras through exhaustive tests. After capturing our street portraits we took the images to a local print shop, to get them turned into exhibition-quality prints. Merry Christmas II you: RX1R II sample gallery updated Recently, the streets of Seattle were filled with revelers dressed as Santa Claus drunk on (at the very least) plenty of holiday cheer. We took the opportunity to give Sony's Cyber-shot RX1R II a merry shooting session, with the aim of stress testing its 399-point PDAF system. News updates Ricoh launches Theta+ Video app for iPhone Published Monday, December 21, 2015 11:01:00 PM GMT Ricoh Imaging has announced THETA+ Video for Apple's iPhone. The app allows for editing of 360° footage and time-lapse videos that have been captured with one of Ricoh's THETA cameras. You can trim video clips, choosing from four viewing formats including Little Planet, which "projects" the video on a small planet floating in space, and apply 10 different filters. Read more on connect.dpreview.com Hasselblad drops price of H5D-50c by 40% for holiday period Published Monday, December 21, 2015 8:32:00 PM GMT Hasselblad has introduced a seasonal offer that sees the price of its flagship H5D-50c and H5D-50c Wi-Fi cameras reduced by over 40% for what it describes as a ‘limited time only’. The offer means the camera is available for €12,500/£11,750 for the standard model, and €12,900/$14,500/£12,100 for the Wi-Fi model. The Hasselblad H5D 50c Wi-Fi is usually €$28,500/£18,350. Read more Sony's new Sky HDR app mimics the effect of a graduated ND filter Published Friday, December 18, 2015 7:55:00 PM GMT Sony has released Sky HDR, a new PlayMemories app for capturing landscape scenes that have wide ranging levels of brightness. Sky HDR aims to replace a graduated ND filter, with various adjustment 'themes' along with control over exposure and white balance of sky and landscape areas separately. Read more Gear of the Year Part 4: Dale's pick - Samsung NX1 Published Friday, December 18, 2015 1:00:00 PM GMT Historically an SLR shooter who has used his fair share of mirrorless cameras, DPR editor Dale Baskin found the NX1 to be most impressive when he reviewed it. The camera may have looked like a moon at first, but over the course of his time with it the NX1 proved to indeed be a space station. Read more Kipon to launch reducer to mount medium format lenses on full frame cameras Published Thursday, December 17, 2015 11:44:00 PM GMT Chinese lens manufacturer Kipon has announced that next year it will make available a reducing adapter designed to allow medium format lenses to fit on full frame cameras. The adapter will have a magnification factor of 0.7x which it says will widen both the effective focal length of the lens in use and its effective aperture. Read our full review to see what we think Sony bringing Alpha SLT-A68 to the US and Canada Published Thursday, December 17, 2015 6:00:00 PM GMT Sony is bringing its Alpha SLT-A68 DSLR camera - announced in Europe back on November 5th - to the US and Canada this spring. The a68 uses the company's Translucent Mirror Technology, which allows for 8 fps continuous shooting with full-time autofocus. It sports a 24MP CMOS sensor, 79-point AF system (borrowed from the a77 II), a tilting LCD display, and Full HD video recording using the XAVC S codec. Drone operators are required to register their UAVs with the Unmanned Aircraft System registry starting December 21, and failure to register could result in criminal and civil penalties. The update comes with a number of new features, some of which take advantage of new hardware in the Apple iPad Pro and the new iPhone models 6s and 6s Plus. Read more Sigma Announces Protective Lens Made of Clear Glass Ceramic Published Wednesday, December 16, 2015 5:01:00 AM GMT Sigma has created an all-new protective filter, the Sigma Water Repellent (WR) Ceramic Protector, using Clear Glass Ceramic with water and oil repellent coating. This is the first filter to use such a material in its construction. It promises both lighter weight and higher strength than normal protective filters with minimal effects on transmittance and sharpness. Make-up bracketing and selfie boutiques help shoot Casio to record levels of profit Published Wednesday, December 16, 2015 12:55:00 AM GMT Casio's TR series of Exilim compacts has propelled the Japanese company to record profitability this year after the cameras caught ahold of the massive Chinese selfie market. According to a report on Nikkei Asian Review, Casio is on track to make a $403 million profit this year, a good part of which has come from sales of its unusually shaped EX-TR compact cameras designed to appeal to female selfie shooters.
