Welcome to the 705th DPReview Newsletter! Over the past few days we've been finishing up our transcriptions of the interviews we conducted at CP+, and working on some of the new cameras that have been announced this year. A reviewable Canon EOS M50 arrived in our office recently, and we've already posted a gallery of samples and a quick investigation into its new .CR3 Raw format. Watch this space for a full review soon. We just received a Pentax K-1 II and a Panasonic Lumix DC-ZS200, too, and we're hoping to publish sample images and more from both of those cameras in the next few days. Mano a mono(chrom): the humbling of a color-only photographer After 15 years of shooting strictly in color, I took a Leica Monochrom on our recent trip to Japan. I won't say that it was always a fun experience, but it was definitely interesting - and probably good for my photography. Read more about my experience shooting with the Leica Monochrom (Typ 246) Quick look: Canon's new compressed Raw format Inside Canon's new EOS M50 lies a new Raw format dubbed CR3, and with it, an option to record compact C-Raw files that are 30-40% smaller than their losslessly compressed CR2 equivalents. But what – if any – impact does that have on image quality for everyday shooting? Let's find out. Take a look inside Canon's new .CRW Raw format The Canon EOS M50 is an approachable, mid-range mirrorless camera. While there's plenty that looks familiar about the M50, there are significant differences in the details compared to its predecessor. Check out our gallery of samples from the Canon EOS M50 At this year's CP+ show in Yokohama, Japan, we talked in-depth with Panasonic about the company's new Lumix G9 and GH5S cameras and its increased emphasis on stills capture as well as high-quality 4K video. Read our full interview with Panasonic executives At last month's CP+ show in Yokohama, we met up with Shigemi Sugimoto, head of Olympus's imaging business unit. He explained where he sees the most opportunity for Olympus, and how his company will continue to differentiate itself from the competition.
