The focus of this short holiday week here in the States was our initial review of the Leica D-Lux 8, which Richard was particularly keen to evaluate through the context of just how much the compact camera field has shrunk over the years. Coincidentally, CIPA also announced this week that camera sales in Q1 of 2024 hit a three-year high thanks to mirrorless and compact cameras making a comeback. So maybe the enthusiast compact market won't stay small for long.

Here are some great responses we received from last week's reader question of:  What camera trend is surprising you the most right now?

"Monitor screens that can only be tilted by first swinging them out to the left. This design makes the camera uncomfortable to hand-hold, and if on a tripod the screen now becomes an aerofoil (airfoil) which amplifies the slightest gust of wind to rock the camera.   " - Mike Cowlishaw

"The amount of fantastic digital SLR camera and lens that I never dreamed to own because it was so expensive that's being sold used for a fraction of the price from people that are going mirrorless.  It's absolutely astounding LOL . Dont get me wrong I love mirrorless also !" - Joe Drapeau

"[The resurgance of film cameras.] No film cameras for me - why ruin the earth from chemicals required to develop film - to me kinda like vinyl records compared to digital - can't see much diff and I like playing all on one side." - Michael Deane

Here's next week's question:

Are there any tools you rely on or habits you've developed to look back on older photos that might've otherwise stayed buried in your library?
