25 Years of DPReview in Partnership with MPB

August 11, 2024

This week, we continued to share our detailed assessments of the Canon EOS R5 II's video and photo capabilities. We also concluded our series of interviews with leading camera executives about their thoughts on the state of the camera industry, while Richard also questioned why manufacturers aren't making great compact cameras. Thanks, as always, for reading.

Let me get my hands on a hands-on compact
It's foolhardy to assume you know better than the camera makers when it comes to new models. Despite this, Richard Butler can't help wondering if there's room for a mid-spec, semi-affordable compact that's actually nice to shoot with.

Here's how the we received from last week's reader question of: What's a camera you're most tempted to upgrade to right now? What about the camera has captured your attention?

"Pentax K3iii Monochrome.  A great camera idea at a third of the price of a Leica that will enhance my love of black and white photography." - Nick in Wales

"Although I already have a well-loved and enjoyed collection of Nikons (from film to digital versions) that I'd bought new and have progressively upgraded as even more desirable models were released, the Nikon Z8 is the camera that is on my Highly Tempted list." - Mark in Australia

"Lumix G9II. I use MFT for portability, image quality which works for most things, high quality lenses, weather-sealing, stabilization and video if needed. That combination is hard to match. Today use OM-5 which is great and would keep." - Photo8212

"Sony A7R IV. 61 MP, focusing speed, grip, View screen, Sony quality." - Rudi Mena

"Sony a6700. I currently have a Sony a6500, but like the addition of a second control dial and improved menu, and better video that the a6700 offers." - Anonymous

"Fuji GFX 100 The 102 MPs and the incredibly top quality of Fuji lenses. My plan is to purchase only Fuji Prime lenses rather than zooms." - James McGrew

Here's next week's question:

Richard recently wrote about his wish for more compact cameras. What kind of cameras do you wish the industry was making more of or at least updating more frequently?
